Connecting with Nature Through Japanese Landscape Design
Renowned Japanese landscape designer Hoichi Kurisu, along with Hakone Executive Director Meredith Lee and Garden Curator Jacob Kellner, will treat guests to an engaging exploration of how the fundamentals of Japanese landscape design invite us to slow down and deepen our relationship with nature.
Set against the backdrop of our historic hill-and-pond garden, this talk will also enlighten guests about the meaningful relationship of Hakone's original design to the autumn moon, and how that connection is inspiring design elements in the upcoming Koi Pond Renovation Project set to begin in November 2027.
Following the presentation, guests will enjoy a deluxe sushi bento dinner and refreshments, along with the rare opportunity to enjoy the garden magically illuminated as the autumn moon rises.
EVENT SPEAKERS
Hoichi Kurisu is an internationally recognized landscape designer whose work explores the restorative relationship between people and nature. He is leading the design of Hakone's upcoming koi pond renovation.
Meredith Lee Executive Director, Hakone Foundation Meredith Lee leads the Hakone Foundation's efforts to preserve Hakone's historic legacy while expanding its role as a place for cultural exchange, community engagement, and deeper connection with nature.
Jacob Kellner Garden Curator, Hakone Estate and Gardens Jacob Kellner has cared for Hakone's historic landscape since 2008 and brings an intimate understanding of the garden's design, horticulture, and evolution.
